As a pioneer and forerunner, the non-profit association SmartFactoryKL addresses and demonstrates new paradigms and ICT innovations in manufacturing-related processes since its foundation in 2005. The SmartFactoryKL was one of the initiators and main promoters of Germany’s “Industrie 4.0” High-Tech Strategy. The manufacturer-independent research and demonstration platform is unique in Europe and establishes a network of industrial and research partners which initiate and implement together innovation projects ranging from evaluation of base technologies to the development of marketable products. Especially, this network activity leads us a step forward on the migration path towards the so-called “4th industrial revolution”. As a best practice example for such a collective activity, several productions lines were built up on advanced ICT under the coordination of SmartFactoryKL. An important element of SmartFactoryKL’s mission is to move innovations as quickly as possible from the lab into the marketplace.
SmartFactoryKL works in close cooperation with the Innovative Factory Systems (IFS) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which is one of the largest non-profit contract research institutes in the field of innovative software technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods. The IFS department has been active since 1998 in the field of ambient intelligence systems and ICT-based manufacturing. It investigates technologies and standards in automation engineering and human-machine-interaction.
